I was born in Germany in 1950. I came to Australia aged 9 with my mother and brother. My mother played button accordian, guitar and had a passion for music that she shared with us. She sang and played up until the time of her death. When I was fifteen I played in my first band, playing bass guitar, and this lead to other bands, notably a jug band called "Mud". This was an acoustic band at a time when electric music was at a height of popularity, so going against the trend. This band influenced the acoustic music scene in the 70's . In 1974 I met Jim and we played in various bluegrass and country line-ups. In 1977 Jim and I joined the Bushwackers on an Australian tour after which Jim came home and I stayed in Melbourne. I continued with the Bushwackers for 2 years. I studied jazz and music theory for a year and played with numerous bands and eventually got to play with some of my heroes. These include Bo Didley, Billy Joe Shaver, Steve Young, Joe Son and Jimmy Dale Gilmour, to mention a few. I designed and built my electric up-right double bass with Rad at Beaconsfield Lutherie. ![]() |
